REDUNDANCY Redundancy is a form of dismissal and for which an employer must have genuine reasons, it should not be a sham. The employer must follow the appropriate procedure for fairly selecting staff for redundancy, otherwise it may fall under other catergories, including unfair dismissal and discrimination and enable the employee to refer to an employment tribunal to seek compensation. If you are asked to volunteer for redundancy and are unsure of what to do, or if there is to be collective redundancy of 20 people or more and your employer has not consulted with any trade union or employee representatives, then you should seek advice. You may be entitled to redundancy payment. If you are experiencing difficulties regarding redundancy, or want information, call our Advice Line 0844 848 7969 and speak to one of our Advisers. If an appointment is necessary, you will need to bring any relevant paperwork with you.
